Batumi State Maritime Academy (BSMA)

Batumi State Maritime Academy is proud of its history and that we have been delivering maritime training since the beginning of Maritime Education in Georgia.Maritime education and training in Georgia starts from 1920’s with opening of evening courses for seafarers in Batumi. In 1929 on basis of evening courses Maritime Industrial Technical Secondary School was founded. On March 5th 1944 Maritime Industrial Technical Secondary School was reorganized into Batumi Maritime College and moved to its current building where it is functioning till now.

From 1944 Batumi Maritime College passed long way from professional education institution to university. In 1994 by decision of Georgian Government the College was reorganized in Batumi State Maritime Academy. The current status to BSMA was given on 25th of June 2012 – Legal Entity of Public Law – Teaching University – Batumi State Maritime Academy. Since obtaining its current status BSMA has gone through significant expansion and upgrading infrastructure and educational process.

In 2012 renovated Seafarers Training and Certification Centre was opened. With support of Government of Georgia new Centre became leader in field of maritime short learning courses and certification. Today BSMA Centre is equipped with latest simulators and progressive teaching materials which makes it leading training and certification Centre in the region.

In 2014 BSMA becomes member of leading professional organizations in Maritime field, such as IASST (International Association of Safety and Survival Training) and IMSF (International Maritime Simulator Forum). In 2015 BSMA is hosting BSAMI (Black Sea Association of Maritime Institutions) – meeting of leaders of Maritime Education in Black Sea region. In 2016 BSMA is hosting IASST and welcomes world’s biggest training centers representatives in Batumi.

In 2016 BSMA is among winners of “Industry-led Skills and Workforce Development Project” (ISWD) of Millennium Challenge Account – Georgia (MCA-Georgia). Under the Program of Improvement Competitive Grants scheme 4 new Vocational Educational Programs were developed in partnership with international partners – Pearson Education and BTEC. BSMA Vocational Education Centre has passed and obtained BTEC accreditation.

In 2017 for the first time in its history BSMA received training vessel, which can be used to develop practical skills for students of Maritime Faculty. BSMA’s vision and mission is dedicated to transition of BSMA into leading educational center of Black Sea and Caspian Sea region. Batumi State Maritime Academy strives to become the leading educational center of the Black and Caspian Sea Region in the maritime industry and other related fields.

Study In BSMA

To get Admission at the Batumi State Maritime Academy (BSMA) simply fill the Application form or send all the required documents to bsma@admissionoffice.ge.

List of the required documents:

  1. Copy of the passport;
  2. High School Certificate or BA degree Diploma (for MA degree applicants) along with transcript;
  3. Application fee payment receipt.
  4. Video Interview (Contact us for sample)

Application Status:

After submission, within the 7 working days of fulfilling the application requirements, you will get an official offer letter from the Batumi State Maritime Academy. On the basis of the signed offer letter, Admission office will start enrollment procedure. Translation, notarization, recognition and enrollment procedures take approximately 2 – 4 weeks.

BSMA has no deadline for admission. However, the University has two intakes. Students can get admission to either join Fall Academic Session (September batch) or the Spring Academic Session (February/March batch).

Once the invited applicant sends the personal identification and educational documentation to the Batumi State Maritime Academy, the documents will be submitted to the National Centre for Educational Quality Enhancement and to the Ministry of Education and Science to obtain the Ministry enrollment. As soon as the enrollment procedure will be successfully completed, the University will inform the applicant of his successful enrollment to study in Georgia.

Exchange Programs:
Batumi State Maritime Academy coorperates with the European and US leading universities and offer exchange programs at various European universities to the students for one semester or a year. Thus the university has exchange programs within the individual cooperation, ERAMUS mundus and Eramus + The Batumi State Maritime Academy also offers Exchange Programs in Turkey in the framework of the Mevlana Exchange Program.

International Projects:
Batumi State Maritime Academy carries out various international scientific-research projects, including: Tempus – the EU financed program aiming at promoting higher education reform and cooperating with the EU partner countries.

Because BSMA is one of the top maritime universities in Georgia (Europe) for international students, it attracts many exchange programs students.

Career Service: Student Self-Government: At the Maritime Academy, based on the universal, equal, direct elections, the apolitical organization has been created and functioned according to faculties. Student self-governance consists of 15 members, eleven students from the  Maritime Faculty and four students from Business and Management faculty. He is elected for 3 years and is headed by the Chairman of the Student Self-Government.
The goals of the student self-governance are:
  • Promoting students’ rights and freedoms, protection of their legitimate interests, strengthening and practical realization;
  • Providing students with high quality education, developing professional skills and helping them in self-realization;
  • Ensure students’ participation in the management of the academy;
  • Supporting student initiatives and projects;
  • Organizing scientific-cognitive activities;
  • Support for sports associations and circles activities;
  • Organizing meetings with exhibitions, literary events, creative evenings, prominent persons;
Along with studying in Batumi State Maritime Academy, students enrolled in parallel can participate in student active and healthy cheerful life. To this end, the Department of Culture and Sport operates in the following sections:

Vocational Training Centre: is the structural unit of Batumi State Maritime Academy, which delivers vocational educational programs. The main goal of the Vocational Training Centre is to provide interested individuals with professional / vocational education in compliance to the regulations and in accordance with local and international market requirements.

Currently, BSMA does not have hostels on campus for foreign students. However, apartments and flats are cheap around the university’s vicinity.
